Journalism and Media Production

The Diploma Program in Journalism and Media Production (2 Academic Years, 120 ECTS) is designed to meet the Level 5b indicators of the National Qualifications Framework. The goal of the program is to prepare students for the world of journalism and media by helping them develop communication and cognitive skills, as well as abilities in perception, processing, and handling of information. Upon graduation, students will be equipped to understand and produce mediated communication in its various forms.

Combining theoretical and practical courses, along with modules that promote the integration of scientific knowledge and professional skills, the program aims to achieve learning outcomes that contribute to students’ socially responsible and productive presence in the field of journalism and media. Specifically, graduates of the program will gain skills such as producing journalistic texts of various types for different media (print, audiovisual, digital), researching, analyzing, and synthesizing data and information, generating new research ideas, and demonstrating free, impartial, and objective thinking.

Students in the Diploma in Journalism and Media Production program, under the guidance of the teaching staff and with the support of the college, prepare and publish the printed newspaper “Epi̱koino̱nía” with rich content reflecting the range of topics they engage with during their studies.

Additionally, students have the opportunity to undertake practical training in the College’s Audio and Image Studios, as well as with the college’s online radio station “Noise Radio,” creating their own radio shows and presenting them via live streaming. “Noise Radio” is hosted on the student website “Noise Air” at www.noiseair.com.

Upon the completion of the Programme of Study, the graduates are expected to be able to:

CGNITIVE GOALS:

Knowledge

  1. Acknowledge the demands placed upon journalism in today’s digital world, both in terms of the quality and content of the information
  2. Realise and explain the extent of the influence that journalism and media exert on society – as it relates to the formation of opinions and attitudes – maintaining a critical perspective on the influence of several factors, including culture and society, on media and vice versa

Skills

  1. Develop correct language use (written and spoken) while demonstrating narrating skills
  2. Conduct in-depth journalistic research and synthesise data and information to produce content for all Media (Print, radio, television, internet).

  1. Validate the quality and trustworthiness of information disseminated from a variety of media sources so as to avoid being entrapped to biased information or misinforming the general
  2. Defend and promote the principles of pluralism and multilateralism regarding information, maintaining a critical perspective on their own work and / or the work of others.

Short CV: Mr. Andreou is a Lecturer at KES College since 2021. He has a Master’s Degree (MA) in “Music Education”, from the European University of Cyprus and a Bachelor degree (BA) in “Sound Technology and Musical Instruments”, from the Ionian University. Since 2016, Mr. Andreou is a sound engineer at Ant1-Radio. In the past, he has collaborated with the Municipality of Strovolos teaching musical instrument courses in the Open School of the Municipality of Strovolos (2015 to 2018). He is an External Technician of stringed musical instruments in various companies and musical instrument stores. A study by Mr. Andreou on the construction and restoration of a guitar titled “Restoration of a Casella Brothers Acoustical Guitar and Construction” has been published in the International Journal of Conservation Science (http://ijcs.ro/volume_9.html#issue4).

Short CV: Ms Violari is a Lecturer at KES College since 2019. She holds a degree in Political Science and History from Pantion University of Political and Social Sciences and Postgraduate Diploma from the Department of Communication and Internet Studies of the Cyprus University of Technology. She has been working at at DIAS Publishing Group and at SIGMALIVE online portal since 2016, specialising in police and social reporting. Between 2014-2016, she worked for SPP MEDIA group and 24news online magazine where she was the editor-in-chief and was also editor for Kathimerini newspaper. She represented Cyprus at the annual Asia-Europe Meeting held in Milan in 2015 in 2015 and in 2012 represented Cyprus again at the Athletic and Interstate political rivalries at the Olympics and beyond: A Cross-Cultural Perspective in Ancient Olympia organized by the IOC with the collaboration of Harvard University’s Hellenic Studies Center.

Short CV: Mr Gregoriades is a Lecturer at KES College since 2021. He has a Master’s Degree in Near and Middle Eastern Studies from the University of Toronto and a Bachelors’ Degree in Turkish Studies, from the University of Cyprus. He is also a graduate of the Vladimiros Kafkarides Drama School. Mr Gregoriades has collaborated with the main theater groups and TV stations of Cyprus. He was awarded by the ‘New Promising Student Award’ from the University of Toronto, and he also got a scholarship from the Greek Community of Ontario. Since 2018, Mr Gregoriades is an ally of the Cypriot Commissioner for Children’s Rights.

Short CVMr. Kafkarides is a Lecturer at KES College since 2021. He is the Head of the Sports Department at DIASSIGMA Media Group. He also worked at Astra Radiostation, Politis Newspapers and Omonoia Athletic Club. He also worked, on a part time basis, at Cyprus Broadcasting Corporation (RIK), Cytavision, Man (magazine), and Selides (magazine). He holds a Master’s Degree in Journalism and Media from Sofia University “Kliment Ochridski”.

Short CV: Ms. Kotzamani is a Lecturer at KES College since 2003. She is a holder of a Diploma of Journalism from KES College. Since 2006, she has been working for ANT1 Cyprus television and as of 2011 she holds the position of News Director. She has more than 30 years of experience in television, radio stations, websites and newspapers. Between the years 1987-1999, she worked as a Journalist at DIAS Group (Simerini, Radio Proto, Sigma) and between the years 1999-2006, she worked at Mega as Chief News Editor. Ms Kotzamani participated to a number of seminars, both national and international, on journalism.

Short CV: Mr. Nikolaou is a Lecturer at KES College, where he teaches Public Relations, Crisis Management and Marketing. Mr. Nikolaou has obtained a Master’s degree in Curriculum Design and Development (University of Cyprus, 215) and another Master’s degree in Educational Leadership (Cyprus Institute of Management, 2013). He completed his certificate in Communications at the University of Nicosia in 2012, his undergraduate studies in Journalism and Public Relations in 2009 (Diploma, KES College) and has also obtained a diploma in Public Relations (CIPR Diploma in Public Relations, Chartered Institute of Public Relations) in 2011. He is currently, and since 2016, a PhD candidate of the Department of Journalism and Media Department of the School of Economics and Political Sciences at the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki.

Short CV: Mr Penintaex has been a Lecturer at KES College since 2015. He holds an MA in International Journalism (Broadcast) from City University and a BA in Journalism and Communication Studies from Middlesex University. He has been working for SIGMA television station as a journalist since 2010 and an editor at the newspaper “Simerini tis Kyriakis”. In January 2017, he won 1st Prize in the Pan-Cypriot Competition of KYPE, for the best research report of the year.

Short CV: Mr. Poullados joined the teaching staff of the College in 2022. Mr. Poulados is the Managing Editor of Sigmalive – Radio First Broadcaster.

Short CV: Mr. Rodites is a Lecturer at KES College since 2015. He has studied Scenography at the Lykourgos Stavrakos School of Cinema (1991-1994), graduating with an Honorary Diploma. He has then continued his studies at the London International Film School (1994-1996) and has participated to BBC Location Lighting Course in 1998 and BBC Avid Non Linear Editing in 1999. Since 1997, he has been working as a director, producer, script writer, photography manager at TRANSVIDEO LTD. In 2006, his short film Blues for Nedi Ryan, was shown at the 4th Cypriot Short Film Festival and was awarded the following: 1st Award for Actor, 1st Award for Actress, Production Award for High Level of Artistic and Technical Achievement.

Short CV: Dr. Sarris is a Biologist and holds a Master’s degree (MSc) in Ecology and Environmental Management and a PhD Degree in Biological Sciences of the University of Patra in collaboration with the University of Basel of Switzerland. He has worked as an Assistant Professor – Academic Visitor and Specialist in Research and Teaching at the Department of Biological Studies of the University of Cyprus, a Coordinator

of Postgraduate Module “Conservation and Management of Natural Resources” at the Open University of Cyprus, a Research Fellow at the Department of Life Science of the European University of Cyprus and a Programme Coordinator of “Technician for Production of Organic Products” of KES College. He has a Post Doc experience at the Institute of Botany of the University of Basel, at the Paul Scherrer Institute, and the

University of Patra. He has worked as a Lecturer at the Department of Environmental and Natural Resources of the University of Ioannina and Scientific and laboratory associate at the Department of Environmental Technology and Ecology, and at the Department of Organic Production of the Technological and Educational Institute of Ionian Islands. He is an expert of the International Science Network MedECC. He serves as an Invited Member of the Editorial Board of Annals of Silvicultural Research.

Short CV: Ms. Chrysostomou is a Lecturer at KES College since 2011 and from 2018 and onwards, she is the Assistant Programme Coordinator of Journalism and Public Relations. She has an undergraduate degree in Journalism and Media from the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki. In 2018 – 2021, she worked as a television report editor at Phileleftheros magazines. Between 2016 – 2018, she worked at DIAS Publishing Group as: a chief editor of the I LOVE TV magazine, the person in charge of the interviews for the OK! Magazine, an editor for the Madame Figaro Magazine, a chief editor in the special news department of the group while she also broadcasted a morning show at Radio Proto. In 2009-2015 she worked for SPP Media Group as a cultural editor for Kathimerini newspaper.
