Beauty Therapy and Beauty Therapy Units Management

The profession of Beauty Therapy is evolving year after year, so the creation of a Degree Programme of Beauty Therapy at the level of the Bachelor Degree, which offers knowledge on subjects of specialisation but also organisation, administration and successful operation of Beauty Therapy units, was imperative. KES College offers a four-year programme of “Beauty Therapy and Beauty Therapy Units Management“, providing graduates with all the necessary skills to meet the current professional trends in the field, while having all the skills to participate actively in the more professional and responsible organisation and management of the workplace.

Anatomy

The aim of the subject Anatomy is a thorough understanding of the construction of the human body and knowledge of the structure of cells, tissues and organs and anatomical relationship between them which will make the students capable to outline and understand the effects of aesthetic applications mainly to the supportive and muscular system.

Physiology

The aim of the subject Physiology is to deeply understand the physiological processes of the human body and the physiological functions of the cells, the organs and the main systems of human bodies, which will give the capability to the students to outline and understand the effects of beauty treatments of a person in relation to his/her physiology.

Dermatology I

The aim of the subject Dermatology I is to make the students acquainted with the complex structure of the skin and the functions performed by its accessories.

Principles of Physics

The aim of the subject Principles of Physics is to help students acquire basic knowledge of physics in topics such as heat, electricity and electromagnetism. Such knowledge will help the students understand how the current and the radiation affects the human body, to choose and handle with safety the various specialized electrical machines and in the future be able to monitor and understand the developments in their profession.

Face Morphology and Colour     

The aim of the subject Face Morphology and Colour is the students understand the of morphology of the human face and correct the natural beauty or facial defects through the technique and harmony of the colours

Principles of Chemistry

The aim of the subject Principles of Chemistry is the students to acquire basic knowledge of inorganic and organic chemistry in relation always with the sector of Beauty Therapy.

Facial Aesthetics I

The aim of the subject Facial Aesthetics I is that the students should get a sufficient fundamentals in theory and practical knowledge which are essential to get information and skills needed for the facial care.

Facial Aesthetics II

The aim of the subject Facial Aesthetics II is that the students should recognize skin diseases and disorders and apply the aesthetics methods for successful management of them.

Body Aesthetics I

The aim of the subject Body Aesthetics I is that the students will get the knowledge in relation to the techniques and the therapeutic results of massage, for the improvement of the body and mind health and to apply them in practice.

Dermatology II

The aim of the subject Dermatology II is to make students able to know the basic lesions of the skin, so as to be able to distinguish when they should not interfere, which of them are contagious, and what precautions should be taken.

Depilatory Methods I

The aim of the subject Depilatory Methods I is that the students will understand the structure and function of hair follicle and learn the correct procedure of depilation in order to treat anwanted hair growth.

First Aid

The aim of the subject First Aid is that the students will get the necessary theoretical and practical knowledge of First Aid.

Cosmetology

The aim of the subject Cosmetology is the apprehension by the students of the knowledge that is related with the types, production, the maintenance, the circulation, the use and the attributes of cosmetics.

Basic Concepts and Applications of Computers

The aim of the subject Basic Concepts and Applications of Computers is to make the students capable of understanding the main concepts of IT and be able to operate computers in correct manner.

Fundamentals of Management

The aim of the subject Fundamentals of Management is to introduce students to the various concepts of management including supervision, foundations of decision making and planning, human resource management and general concepts related to people management.

Facial Aesthetics III

The aim of the subject Facial Aesthetics III is that the students should be able to use the electricity with safety and always taking the appropriate precautions while applying electrical treatments for treating various skin problems.

Body Aesthetics II

The aim of the subject Body Aesthetics II is the students will get the knowledge in recognizing the problematic area of the body, make correct diagnosis and application of body electrotherapy treatments within safety.

Kinesiology

The aim of the subject Kinesiology is the acquaint, familiarize and learning from the beauty therapy students the Musculoskeletal System and the Human Movement.

Cosmetic Endocrinology

The aim of the subject Cosmetic Endocrinology is for the students to learn the basic organs, tissues and cells which via hormone production regulate the functions of the organism.

Make-Up

The aim of the subject Make-Up is that the student should know the make-up history, the products, make-up techniques and apply make-up according to the time, clothes and occasion.

Manicure and Pedicure          

The aim of the subject Manicure and Pedicure is to provide sufficient knowledge and practice to the students, in order to offer proper service of nail care and nail extension according to the clients’ desire.

Basic Principles of Marketing

The aims of the subject, Basic Principles of Marketing are the theoretical comprehension and practical application of various modern principles of customer-centric Marketing from the students in the competitive environment of businesses.

Body Aesthetics III

The aim of the subject Body Aesthetics III is that the students will be able to apply correctly within safety electrotherapy treatment following all safety rules.

Dermatology III

The aim of the subject Dermatology III is to make the students aware of various tumors of the skin, the risks posed by nevi and melanomas. Possess the basic knowledge to understand when and how the beauty therapist is able to make a positive contribution to the treatment.

Nosology

The aim of the subject Nosology is for the students to be aware of the major histopathological lesions and disorders of the tissues and organs of the body so as to be able to adjust their aesthetic applications where needed.

Depilatory Methods II

The aim of the subject Depilatory Methods II is fundamental knowledge and practical work necessary to have the information and skills needed for the application of permanent depilation methods to treat excessive hair growth with the use of electric current.

Hygiene

The aim of the subject Hygiene is to make the students understand the various infectious diseases that will make them able to recognize the clinical symptoms and other characteristics of the main findings of infectious diseases to take appropriate precautions.

Stress Management Techniques

The aim of the subject Stress Management Techniques is the understanding by the students of the meaning of Stress and the effects to the human organism and to be able to demonstrate stress management techniques.

Aromatherapy

The aim of the subject Aromatherapy is to give the opportunity to the students to take a theoretical basis for the beneficial ingredients of essential oils and put in practice the therapeutic uses of them for the improvement of health of the body and calm of the mind.

Professional / Theatrical Make-Up

The aim of the subject Professional/Theatrical Make-up is the students to become capable make-up artists by using the specific application techniques, the appropriate products, to shape the face or and the body according with the character and the role they want to create.

Reflexology

The aim of the subject Reflexology is to make the students understand and explain the meaning of reflexology, and be able to demonstrate the treatment procedure.

Organization of Beauty Units

The aim of the subject Organization of Beauty Units is that the students will understand the way of organizing and operating Beauty Units and Wellness.

English Terminology

The aim of the subject English Terminology is to enable students understand basic Aesthetics and Make-up themes in English Language and familiarize with its basic terminology.

Health and Safety at Work

The aim of the subject Health and Safety at Work is, to educate students about health issues, safety and protection required in the working environment.

Research Methodology

The aim of the subject Research Methodology is the understanding by the students of the necessity of writing projects as a means of communication of scientific discoveries, the understanding of the method the project is processed in the form of a review or a research project and the writing of a project on a specific subject related to Beauty Therapy.

Psychology

The aim of the subject Psychology is for students to develop the basic understanding of the content of psychology, the science that deals with the understanding of human behavior and mental procedures

Human Recourse Management

The aim of the subject Human Resource Management is to introduce the techniques and legal aspects of human resource management from a strategic business perspective

Nutrition – Dietetics

The aim of the subject Nutrition – Dietetics is to provide students with knowledge and skills regarding nutritional needs and for the improvement of quality of their daily life as well as adapting a healthy eating habits.

Aesthetic Gymnastics

The aim of the subject Aesthetic Gymnastics is to make students able to understand the basic principles of aesthetics gymnastics and its importance, to be able to use and recommend exercise programs that are applicable in the context of aesthetics as auxiliary means of implementation in practice of aesthetic programs.

Cosmetic Surgery

The aim of the subject Cosmetic Surgery is for students to be aware of various treatments and surgeries in order to know how the aesthetic can help before and after surgery.

Basic Principles of Laser/IPL

The aim of the subject Basic Principles of Laser/IPL is that the students will acquire sufficient knowledge about Laser/IPL, the indications and contra-indication from their use and to realize that it is a valuable aid with enormous applicability for permanent epilating purposes etc.

Professional Ethics

The aim of the subject Professional Ethics is to enable students to understand the Principles and the Concepts of the Scientific and Professional Ethics, and to be able by applying the ethical rules mechanisms, to regulate their actions as to the practice of their profession.

SPA Therapies

The aim of the subject SPA Therapies is for students to receive a thorough understanding and meaning of the word SPA, and to be able to demonstrate different SPA treatments (i.e. hydrotherapy services).

LASER/IPL Applications in Aesthetics

The aim of the subject LASER/IPL Applications in Aesthetics is for students to become familiar with the application of soft intensity Laser and IPL knowing the indications but also the contraindications by taking precautionary measures to avoid any consequences.

Entrepreneurship                   

The aim of the subject Entrepreneurship is for students to understand the concept of entrepreneurship and to acquire knowledge and skills that will enable them to create their own business and manage its development.

Herbal Therapy 

The aim of the subject Herbal Therapy is to provide students with the necessary theoretical and practical knowledge of herbal (plant) actions on the human body. Also students will learn the importance of handling the various formulations with caution and safety when preforming aesthetic therapies.

Business Strategy  

The aim of the subject Business Strategy is the students understanding of how businesses and, in particular, modern aesthetics institutes will manage strategy and programming to be able to set short term, medium and long-term objectives taking into account external and unstable environmental factors which are obstacles and challenges for modern businesses.

Basic Principles of Accounting 

The aim of the subject, Basic Principles of Accounting, is to introduce students to the basic principles of accounting, its uses, and its various applications.

Practical Training

The aims of the subject Practical Training is the practical application of the knowledge acquired during the studies as a student in the science of aesthetics.

Thesis

The aim of the subject Thesis is the development of self-action and the depth of the student in a cognitive aspect of the science of aesthetics that he/she has to promote.

Short CV: Mr Charalambos Assos is a Lecturer at KES College since 2018. He is a holder of an undergraduate university Degree and an MSc in Physical Education from the University of Semmelweis while he is also in the process of obtaining a postgraduate qualification in Special Inclusive Education from the European University of Cyprus. Mr Assos has a SHO 1st Dan in Karate, he works since 2014 at a gym while in 2017 he has been part of the National Team of Cyprus in Bodybuilding as a coach at a foreign contest.

He is in possession of a Post Graduate Degree in Εducational Leadership and Politics from Cyprus Open University and a Degree (BSc) in Accounting and Finance from University of North Texas. He is an Accounting Lecturer in numerous educational institutions from 1992. Moreover he worked as an Auditor from 1988 to 1991 acquiring significant experience on issues related to his profession. He also participated in numerous seminars whereby, he had the opportunity to enrich his knowledge and improve his skills. He is accredited by the Human Resource Development Authority as an internal trainer.

Short CV: Ms. Elina Gavrielides is a Lecturer at KES COLLEGE since 2022 where she teaches Facial Morphology and Color as well as Makeup. She is a holder of a Hons Degree (BA) Make-up and Hair Design from Southampton Solent University, UK with specialisation on Makeup for Theatre and Film.

She has done her dissertation on Plus Size: The Future of Fashion and Make-up and also created her own book named ELYΣIAN writing and presenting the connection of modern fashion, with the fashion of Ancient Greece.

She has worked in 2019 at MAC Cosmetics as a makeup artist trainee and has done her internship there as well. During her studies in UK she also worked part 2018-2020 in a beauty salon as a Make-up Artist.

Short CV: Dr Nicos Georgiou is a Senior Lecturer at KES College since 2009. He has a Doctorate Degree in Psychology, a Master’s Degree in Educational Psychology, a Bachelor’s Degree in Psychology and a Diploma in Psychiatric Nursing. Mr Georgiou has ample research activity having assumed the role of assistant researcher in a number of programs from 2005 to date. He has ample teaching experience in the field of psychology and has worked for the Public Service and the State Prison as a Psychologist. During his career he has given a number of presentations on several topics related to his profession and has also published several articles.

Short CV: Ms Ligkou Maria is a physical education and sport science graduate of Aristotle University of Thessaloniki (Greece) and an assistant physiotherapist degree holder. Certified les Mills Cyprus instructor at bodypump, cx worx and body combat. Furthermore, she is a certified Studio one (Greece) personal and group trainer. Ms Ligkou is a holder of the Cyprus football association’s award as an Uefa C level coach. She has perennial experience in football infrastructure department at both Greece and Cyprus. Since 2018 she works as a personal trainer, coach and group fitness trainer at Oxygen Gym in Nicosia. At the same time from 2019 she works as a physical condition instructor and trainer at the women’s football team of Omonoia Nicosia. In addition, she has been panhellenic taekwondo champion in all age categories, member and representative of taekwondo union of North Greece at international competitions. Also from 2015 until now is a weightlifting athlete with many recognitions and medals both in Greece and Cyprus. She participated in many certified seminars related with her field of science. She has 14 years of experience in teaching young learners and 12 years of experience as a Lecturer at Higher Education Institutions. In addition, she has attended several seminars regarding teaching methods to young learners organized mostly by Cambridge ESOL. She teaches subjects of her specialty.

Short CV: Mrs Christiana Michael is a Lecturer at KES College for the academic year 2021. She holds a Degree in Beauty Therapy and Beauty Therapy Units Management, a Higher Diploma in Beauty Therapy – Applied Science and a Diploma in Lecturing in ITEC Therapies (England). She has attended several seminars and has extensive experience in teaching.

Mrs Shiarly is a holder of a postgraduate qualification (MA) in Educational Science and Educational Leadership and a holder of a Degree in Beauty Therapy. She has participated in Seminars and Educational Programs, acquiring a number of Certifications in Beauty Therapy Methods such as Laser and IPL, Herbal Therapies, Spa Therapies, Professional Makeup and more, but also in Education as well as in Health and Safety. She has written a number of textbooks on Beauty Therapy that are used by students. In 2018, she received her degree in Beauty Therapy and Beauty Therapy Units Management with an award of excellence. She worked as a spa therapist, from 2017 until 2018, at a spa centre which is part of a chain of spa centres in Cyprus. She has also worked as a beautician and an assistant at a Dermatology medical centre in Nicosia. Moreover, she has participated in various educational seminars regarding the area of beauty studies, both in Cyprus and abroad. She teaches subjects of her specialty.

Short CV: Dr. Sophocleous Xanthi is a Senior Lecturer at KES College since 2017 and she is a holder of an undergraduate qualification in Clinical Nutrition and Dietetics from the Charokopio University in Athens. Moreover, she holds an MBA from Maastricht School of Management. Ms Sophocleous is a holder of a PhD with the topic: Associations between Cypriot’s children television food advertising exposure and their eating behavior: An observational and diagnostic survey with the use of questionnaires and eating behavior tests in 1088 Cypriot children. She has in-depth experience as a Medical Representative of a Pharmaceutical company. From 2010-2018 she has her own personal nutrition practice.

Brief Curriculum Vitae: Dr Petri Papafilippou, is employed as a Senior Lecturer at KES COLLEGE since October of 2022, teaching Chemistry lessons. Between September 2019 and June 2022 she has taught Chemistry lessons in other Higher Education Institutions in Cyprus.

Dr. Petri Papaphilippou graduated from the Chemistry Department of the University of Cyprus (2003) and received her MSc degree in Chemistry from the same department in 2005. The MSc thesis was emphasized on the Inorganic chemistry, and specifically on the synthesis and characterization of vanadium complexes V(IV,V) with chelate phenolate ligands. In 2010, Dr. Petri Papaphilippou received a PhD in Mechanical Engineering and Manufacturing (University of Cyprus). During her PhD studies, she had worked on the synthesis, characterization and applications of new polymeric materials in the Βiomedical and Nanotechnology field. More specifically, the PhD thesis’ title is: “Synthesis, Characterization and Applications of Novel Magneto-responsive and pH-Responsive Polymer-based Materials”. Between February 2011 and April 2013, she worked in “GAIA”-Laboratory of Environmental Engineering at the Department of Civil Engineering and Environmental Engineering (University of Cyprus) as post-doctoral researcher on projects funded by Cyprus Research Promotion Foundation, by European Union (ENPI, FP7) and by University of Cyprus Grant “New Researchers”. Within the postdoctoral fellowship period in “GAIA”, the research activities were focused on the design and application of advanced chemical oxidation methods for the treatment of olive oil wastewater and of photo-driven processes for the degradation of other xenobiotic compounds.

Between December 2013 and March 2015, she worked as post-doctoral associate at the Mechanical and Manufacturing Department (University of Cyprus). Moreover, the research activities were focused on the design and application of fibrous membranes on urban wastewater treatment and also, on the preparation of PVP-crosslinked electrospun membranes with embedded Cu2O nanoparticles and their effective utilization in heterogeneous catalysis. Moreover, since February 2019, she works as post-doctoral research fellow at the Mechanical and Manufacturing Department (University of Cyprus) on a project funded by Cyprus Research Foundation. Her research activity under this project is the synthesis of polymer-based micelles that have the ability to encapsulate into their micellar core pharmaceutical substances. Such composite compounds could be applied in Biomedical field as drug nano-carriers in Cancer therapy. Her research activities (citations ~ 340 (h-index = 7)) are published in international peer-reviewed scientific journals such as BiomacromoleculesChemical Engineering Journal και ACS Applied Materials & Interfaces. Furthermore, she was invited to review in international peer-reviewed scientific journals such as RSC advances, Journal of Materials Chemistry CJournal of Molecular LiquidsPolymer International and Ambiagua. He also worked as the Head of the Marketing & Subscriptions Service Department at CreditInfo Cyprus from 2004 to 2008 and at Leptos Group of Companies as a Marketing Executive from 2000 to 2002.
